Director of Curation

Dr. Stephen F. Zitzer

PhD. Biology and Ecology

As the co-founder and director of curation for the Belize Natural History Archive, my extensive academic background in soil science, forestry, and plant physiology, along with my teaching experience at Texas A&M and UNLV in Nevada, have uniquely positioned me to lead this institution dedicated to preserving Belize’s natural heritage. My lifelong hobby as a birder and deep-seated passion for biodiversity conservation serve as the driving force behind my commitment to curating a collection that showcases the richness of Belize’s ecosystems.

My expertise in animal preservation, particularly in bird species, aligns seamlessly with the archive’s mission to catalog and safeguard the country’s diverse flora and fauna for future generations. By combining my academic knowledge with my love for birding and dedication to biodiversity preservation, I bring a wealth of scientific understanding and a profound respect for the natural world to the Belize Natural History Archive.

My decision to retire in Belize reflects my desire to immerse myself in a community where I can contribute to the education and awareness of the country’s young generation about the importance of respecting and conserving biodiversity. Through my role as the director of curation, I not only showcase my dedication to research and scientific inquiry but also embody a commitment to nurturing a sense of environmental stewardship among the youth of Belize.

In leading the Belize Natural History Archive, I not only curate a collection that captures the essence of Belize’s natural wealth but also personify a life devoted to the preservation and celebration of the planet’s ecological diversity. My journey from academic pursuits to hands-on conservation work exemplifies a holistic approach to environmental education and sustainability, shaping a legacy that will endure for generations to come.

“From Production to Preservation: A Journey of Entrepreneurship and Legacy Building.”

This encapsulates my transition from running a production company for over 30 years to recognizing the need for a natural history building that preserves and safeguards a country’s natural wealth for future generations. It signifies a shift from business acumen to environmental stewardship and the enduring legacy I seek to leave behind for the benefit of the planet and those who will inherit it.

I am thrilled to serve as the Co-Founder and Managing Director of the Belize Natural History Archive, where we are dedicated to safeguarding the natural wealth of Belize for generations to come.

With years of experience at the helm of a production company, I have encountered a myriad of learning opportunities, and overcome various challenges that have uniquely prepared me for this pivotal role. Drawing upon this wealth of experience, I am committed to steering the Belize Natural History Archive towards becoming a renowned and cherished institution dedicated to the preservation of Belize’s rich natural heritage.

Through a journey marked by dedication, innovation, and a deep-rooted passion for conservation, I am proud to lead this institution on a mission to not only preserve our natural history but also to inspire future generations to appreciate and protect the ecological treasures that make Belize unique.
